Don’t let board books fool you. You may be thinking, “Oh, a board book, this will be easy!”
“A board book, I can read this with my eyes shut!”
“A board book, boooooring!”
All of those thoughts would be false, especially if you’re about to open GOD’S RAINBOW OF PROMISES: An ASL Gospel Signs Board Book by Janet Moreno, creator of @deafmotherhood, and her sister, Jennifer Fusco. Published by Waterbrook and illustrated by Ziyue Chen.
Janet and Jennifer have written such a beautiful and interesting book! They’ve taken God’s rainbow that He gave to Noah and used each color to remind us of God’s promises. Along with that beautiful truth, the sisters teach us signs for each color of the rainbow and words - all of which lead back to God and what He has done, is doing, and will do.
I love that there is something new to learn on each spread. A new promise of God and TWO new signs. I read the book aloud to my kids, ages 7-14, and we were all doing our best to learn the signs. It’s not easy, but joyful to learn. Ziyue Chen did an excellent job with illustrations and using arrows to help guide how to do each sign. I imagine this wasn’t an easy task.
I think it’s great that Janet and Jennifer have a heart for our children and know how important it is to learn about God, who He is, His promises, and that all connects back to Him. The sooner we can teach these truths to our kids, the better. With the simple, one-sentence description of what each rainbow color represents, a parent could use this book almost like a catechism. It would be very easy to read this book over and over again so that it becomes a memorized treasure to you and your child.
GOD’S RAINBOW OF PROMISES is available now at all major book sellers.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
